Fall Status Update

I should probably explain the lack of recent updates.

At the beginning of September I returned to school. I am only taking three post-secondary courses, but I also have two part-time jobs, one as a writing tutor and another as a research assistant. In addition, I occasionally freelance as a web designer. All of those things compounded have resulted in a very busy Adam — busy enough that I haven’t had the opportunity to really sit down and figure out the things I’d like to make for Bachelor Pan this fall.

I’ve made a few curries for myself and began experimenting with black beans and rice to try and find a nice, solid dependable recipe for those, but then I ran out of black beans and the only place I can buy black beans in town is too far away to walk to. I had plans to make Blueberry Hand Pies with a friend, but it turns out we are both really busy, and it hasn’t happened yet.

Coming up, I’d like to make a post on the wonders of exploring new cheeses, and a good homemade bread that I think I promised I would post six months ago.

I haven’t been completely idle, though. Yesterday, my friend Julia, who appears in the Balsamic Strawberries post, hosted a “second Thanksgiving” pot-luck for which I baked a pecan pie (recipe here). It was only my second ever pie, but it came out relatively well and everyone seemed to enjoy it. I did have a slight kitchen disaster in which pecan-flavoured goop spilled all over my stove and floor, but I managed to salvage things. That pie dough recipe that Claire featured in Sel et Sucre is really quite easy and reliable.

So, I’m sorry I haven’t been posting much. I’ve been having a lovely fall, though, with lots of good people. Here’s a shot from Second Thanksgiving last night. I’m the one in the ridiculous sweater who looks like I’m trying not to laugh.
